The Ushers

The Ushers/ Head Usher

The Ushers
The ushers are chosen by the groom and his best man and are usually brothers, close relatives or friends (which covers just about anyone!) of the bride and groom. As a general guide you will need an usher for each 50 guests.
Generally, ushers are the responsibility of the best man, who ensures they know their duties. Sometimes one of the ushers will be appointed as the Head Usher - his job is to help the groom and his best man plan the ushers duties and to be responsible for the ushers carrying out their duties before, during and after the wedding.

1 - 3 months
  • Meet up with the best man to outline your duties;

  • Hire your suit in consultation with groom and best man.
  • 0 - 2 weeks

  • Cut your hair a couple of days before. Remember if you have a hat as part of your outfit, it may become a bit loose on your head.

  • Confirm arrangements and times with best man.
  • On the day

  • Collect buttonholes and service sheets as necessary;
  • Arrive an hour before the ceremony begins;
  • Help with car parking;
  • Greet all guests at the ceremony, then ask which family they represent and seat accordingly (optional - traditionally bride's family/friends on left and groom's family/friends on the right of the centre aisle; however, if it is expected that this seating arrangement will be very uneven, the ushers can seat guests wherever)
  • Distribute service sheets or hymn books;
  • Direct guests to their seats;
  • Ask that minister's requests regarding confetti-throwing and photography are respected;

  • Stay behind to ensure all guests have means of getting to the reception;

  • Ensure church is left tidy;

  • Some of the ushers should go ahead to the reception with the other attendants (and before the guests) to help with parking if necessary.
  • At the Reception

    • Help guests have a good time by getting into the spirit of the occasion.
    • Mingle and chat with as many people as possible;
    • Keep an eye out for elderly and younger guests;
    • Introduce guests to each other;
    • Make the day enjoyable for all.

    Day after the Wedding

    • Return your suit if it was hired.
